What I Learned About the Supreme Court

After watching videos about the US Supreme Court, I have come to a better understanding of what the Supreme Court was intended to do.

The most important takeaway from the videos, in my opinion, is the Supreme Court's original purpose: to serve as a equal branch of government and help maintain the system of checks and balances. This purpose is essential because, without checks and balances, one branch of government could accumulate too much power and begin operating more like a dictatorship or a monarchy than a constitutional government.
For example, if a president decides to act in a way that conflicts with the Constitution, the Supreme Court has the authority to review those actions and determine whether they are constitutional. The Court acts as a safeguard against the government.

Something I did not know before watching these videos was the significance of the case Marbury v. Madison (1803). This decision established judicial review. Judicial review is the Supreme Court's power to determine whether laws or government actions are constitutional.

Before watching the videos, I already knew that Supreme Court justices are appointed rather than elected and serve lifetime terms, but I didn’t fully appreciate how much impact their decisions can have on the country for generations. Because justices serve for life, a single appointment can influence constitutional interpretation for decades.

The videos also made me think more critically about the controversy that often surrounds the Court. Today, many Americans have strong and often opposing opinions about Supreme Court justices and their decisions. The justices are supposed to be guided by the Constitution, but constitutional interpretation is not always straightforward. Different justices may genuinely believe that the Constitution supports different outcomes.

At the same time, some people argue that personal beliefs can influence judicial decisions. Whether that is true or not, it demonstrates how important the Court is and why its decisions receive so much public attention.

For more information about the Supreme Court, I visited the official Supreme Court website: https://www.supremecourt.gov/

Overall, these videos helped me see the Supreme Court as more than just a group of judges. It is an institution that helps balance power within the federal government, protects constitutional principles, and continues to shape American society more than two centuries after the Constitution was written. In that sense, the ideas of people who lived hundreds of years ago still influence decisions being made today.

Top 5 News Sources

1. B/R Women’s Sports / ESPNW
https://www.espn.com/espnw/

https://bleacherreport.com/womens-sports

B/R Women’s Sports and ESPNW are two of my favorite sources that focus on women's athletics. Women's athletics does not often receive the same level of attention as men sports. Because I am a fan of women's basketball and other women sports, I like how these platforms show games, stories, highlight reels, and analyze, different teams. If anyone wants to stay informed about women's sports, I would recommend these two sources.

2. Bleacher Report
https://bleacherreport.com

Bleacher Report is another one of my primary sources for sports news because it gives information very quickly. The platform provides highlights, breaking news, and social media content that updates me on multiple sports. I like how they have traditional reporting and creative social media storytelling. I would recommend the source for anyone who likes quick an entertaining coverage of multiple sports without searching through websites.

3. WXII 12 News
https://www.wxii12.com

WXII News is a source that I go to for local news because it focuses on events happening in the Piedmont triad region (Greensboro, High Point, Winston-Salem.) Not only do I live in North Carolina, but I attend college in North Carolina as well. That's why it's important that I stay informed on any breaking news, events, weather, or community issues that affect my area of living. WXII is a reliable source and I would recommend it for anyone who needs local news in the Piedmont Triad area.

4. The View
https://abc.com/shows/the-view

The View is one of my favorite sources of information because it includes people with different perspectives. They report current events, social issues, politics, and more. It is a talk show, but I enjoy listening to multiple viewpoints on important topics. I often find myself listening to different perspectives about issues that may differ from my own. I would recommend the view to people who enjoy listening to discourse about current events rather than reading headlines.

5. NBC Nightly News
https://www.nbcnews.com/nightly-news

NBC Nightly News is in my opinion, one of the most reliable national news programs. I get updates on international events, politics, news, and the occasional feel-good story. It is a professional platform that helps me stay informed about major events that happen around the world. I would recommend NBC nightly news to people who are looking for trusted new source that gives an overall summary of the days biggest news stories.
